To help local governments better plan for disaster recovery for their residents, it would helpful to know which areas contained high risk/vulnerable individuals. These individuals might include the elderly, small children, disabled individuals, those who are language isolated, and those who do not have access to a vehicle. Creation of heat maps, or other visualizations of these populations can help emergency management... more »
I am obviously overlooking something. There must be a better way to determine a "Concept"/"Variable Name" than trudging through the xml file.
Can someone please point me in the correct direction?
I am looking for a way to get the ACS data for a radius around a given point. Using the FCC's API I can get the Census Tract and Block number to use. Does anyone know of a way to get the Census tract numbers say within a 5 mile radius?
IS there any webservice or feature which will give me the city value for the passed coordinates. Currently, the FCC API returns FIPS Code for the coordinates, is there a way to send this FIPS code and get the city value back, any ideas, thoughts will be highly appreciated.
I'm trying to retrieve the population for a certain zip code. What I found in your online documentation is that I should use the following URL string: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key=(key)&get=P0010001&for=zip+code+tabulation+area:(zip)&in=state:(state) ...where (key) is my API key, (zip) is the zip code, and (state) is a two digit code that you use to identify states. The problem that I run into is that I... more »
Hello, Just wanted to let you know that I've just published an android tablet app to the Google Play Store: CensusUS at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.clcassidy.censusus. The app uses the Census APIs combined with Google Maps v2. By tapping on the map and the navigation menus on the tablet, users are able to select locations at all levels of geography, from the national down to the tract level, and... more »
I had already created a thematic map application that gave information about the uncertainty surrounding ACS estimates (move your mouse over the counties). This website generates the map using API data requests. A future expansion will include parsing the variables XML file.
This app provides entrepreneurs granular data to help them choose the location for a new business based on local population characteristics and existing businesses. In its first iteration, Startup will provide results based on a limited set of location-based criteria: • Number of related businesses per capita • Population • Median income Startup asks the user to enter a zip code, and to choose a business from a list... more »
Over the last two days, I submitted a request for an Census API key at
The website says to expect an email after a few minutes, but I've never received any email about how to activate an API key. (Yes, I've checked my spam folder.)
I need a list of all the states' legislature's district names. I will use this list as the definitive list of district names that data is mapped to. I tried to use the " Census Name Lookup Tables" found here: https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/nlt.html but there are many district names that don't map properly to the district names returned by the 2012-5yr-ACS API. So, for example, if I submit the query: http://api.census.gov/data/2012/acs5?get=B19301_001E&for=state+legislative+district+(lower+chamber):*&in=state:50... more »
I'm working on a school project with 2010 Census data. Currently, we are getting tract-level data using codes from http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1/variables.json to get data. For example, to find the white 65-year old males in a county's tracts, we make the API call: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key=[key]&get=PCT012I068,NAME&for=tract:*&in=state:08+county:059 However, when making the same call at a block... more »
While there are thousands of individual ACS variables in the ACS data variable list (XML file), I could not find the basic Educational Attainment variables (I did find earnings by educational attainment)...Are they there and I am just not finding them?
the api should simply ignore any parameter it doesn't understand instead of throwing an error. For example jquery will append _=randomNumber to prevent caching of jsonp by the browser. This feature breaks that.
