I am looking for a way to get the ACS data for a radius around a given point. Using the FCC's API I can get the Census Tract and Block number to use. Does anyone know of a way to get the Census tract numbers say within a 5 mile radius?
I'm trying to retrieve the population for a certain zip code. What I found in your online documentation is that I should use the following URL string: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key=(key)&get=P0010001&for=zip+code+tabulation+area:(zip)&in=state:(state) ...where (key) is my API key, (zip) is the zip code, and (state) is a two digit code that you use to identify states. The problem that I run into is that I ...more »
I need a list of all the states' legislature's district names. I will use this list as the definitive list of district names that data is mapped to. I tried to use the " Census Name Lookup Tables" found here: https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/nlt.html but there are many district names that don't map properly to the district names returned by the 2012-5yr-ACS API. So, for example, if I submit the query: http://api.census.gov/data/2012/acs5?get=B19301_001E&for=state+legislative+district+(lower+chamber):*&in=state:50 ...more »
Can I use this API to create an easy way for users on my website to get their census tract number without using a map? I simply want the users to input their residential address into text fields. Hopefully this API will spit out their 10 digit census tract number after input. I would prefer NOT to redirect applicants to a 3rd party site. I ultimately want to use the census tract number from the API to reconcile it with ...more »
A dissection of the API query string for the Census API I have posted this in another topic, however it is hard to find. Host name, API sub-folder (this triggers our api to parse the following data). http://api.census.gov/data/ This portion refers to the DataSet/Instance pair (without both, it's difficult to determine what number you want back) 2010/sf1? This determines what variables to retrieve (required, ...more »
Is there any documentation for interpreting the values returned in the DATE variable in the population estimates API?
For example, http://api.census.gov/data/2013/pep/natstprc?get=POP,DATE&for=state:25&key=xxxxx returns numerically coded data values (e.g., "1", "6"). I can see by the data that 6 = 2013 but would love to see official documentation somewhere.
Is it possible to get all tracts within a MSA, as in (an attempt to get all tracts in the DC metro):
"error: unknown/unsupported geography heirarchy"
If not this would be useful!
For ACS data - is there a way to tell which codes are valid for tracts vs block group? Some codes work for both, some return "null" when the block-group level is queried. For example, the following url works for the tract level: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/acs5?key=4be82289939444f20513cd7c3c3eafb42e0d9ccf&get=B06007_003E,NAME&for=tract:*&in=state:08+county:059 But using the same code, it returns null for the ...more »
Here's an example of how to use DataFerret (a Census table-building tool) to lookup variable names and their descriptions on http://dataferrett.census.gov/run.html
In order to understand how crime or criminal elements are embedded within different communities, it may be useful to combine neighborhood crime data with ACS demographic and housing data. There are hotspots in most cities that could be objectively analyzed to reveal patterns which may be disrupted by governmental policy. That is, if the data clearly points to consistent reliable trends.
I am trying to make tract-level thematic maps for several indicators (e.g. unemployment, median family income etc.). In the KML and SVG files I am using (including that obtained from TIGER) the 11 digit GeoID10 seems to be the best column through which I can merge data pertaining to the census tracts either by using the "GEO.id2" field from ACS data downloaded as CSV from FactFinder or through a concatenation of ...more »
We are trying to create a tool where a user would:
1) Enter in their "home" zip code
2) Enter in a radius in miles
3) Hit an "Update" button.
Once the user hit the Update button, the screen would show all zip codes, all cities and all counties within the specified number of miles from the home zip code. Can these Census tools be used to create such a system?
In order to get the proper titles for variables/cells in the data I needed to write a program to merge two Excel files. The two files are Sequence_Number_and_Table_Number_Lookup.xls and ACS2012_5-Year_TableShells.xls. The first one contains the sequence and line numbers so that I can get the values from the data-tables. The second one has indents in the cell titles so I know how to combine them to create a proper cell ...more »
Hi, I am attempting to examine households within a given geography, and would like to count the number of households which fill certain income and age constraints. For example: Household contains person age 12 Household income between $50k and $60k Is this possible using the ACS 3-year tables? When I load a generic tabulation, I know the fields exist (age, income, location) but I cannot get the conditional results (% ...more »
Hi, Are there any commercial/free APIs that are available for developers to use that are ALREADY sourcing from the Census.gov datasets? Factual's Geopulse Context was doing so as recently as 2013 but they've deprecated their API. It generated easy to access and useful demographic data from a lat/long and made importing into chart libraries super easy. Anyone know of anything similar? Happy to pay $ for a service that's ...more »
