subject matter search

Census has added the very helpful restructured subject matter item lists (eg, http://api.census.gov/data/2000/sf3/variables.html). Thank you. I am seeking an easy way to search for two or more keywords (eg, Age, Hispanic) in a nonphrase structure that will highlight rows/items that meet that condition. ... by searching on the unmodified html. Any thoughts on this? Thank you.

XML Documentation Mislabel

I just wanted to share a labeling error we have run across in the 2010 SF1 API Variables XML. (http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1/variables.xml) Under renter occupied by race/ethnicity for each race/ethnicity (Asian householder as example) the xml:id="H016D0017" and xml:id="H016D0010" are both labeled: label="Renter occupied: !! 7-or-more-person household". pop-up blocker is hindering access to forum

When I'm on http://www.census.gov/developers/ and try to click the link to visit the developer forum, Chrome sees it as a pop-up and blocks it. If I'm not paying attention, it appears that the url doesn't work.

In 1990 sf1, H0240001 should be a stored as a big integer

In the 1990 sf1 data call, H0240001 (Spec Own-occ HUs:Agg Value) is currently returned as a regular integer. However, all the state values are the same - 2,147,483,647, which is the max value that can be stored in a regular integer, indicating that the variable should be stored as a big integer.

DATE variable in Population Estimates API

Is there any documentation for interpreting the values returned in the DATE variable in the population estimates API?

For example, http://api.census.gov/data/2013/pep/natstprc?get=POP,DATE&for=state:25&key=xxxxx returns numerically coded data values (e.g., "1", "6"). I can see by the data that 6 = 2013 but would love to see official documentation somewhere.

Thanks!

Census Personnel Inadvertently Removed An Important Page

You inadvertently removed an important page: http://www.census.gov/developers/data/?eml=gd&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery.

This page had links to documentation, variables and examples for the ACS5 API.

It took us a while to find this page. Please put it back up.

Missing Variables for 1990 "travel time" sf3

On the 1990 census sf3 variable call, two time frames (20 to 24 and 35 to 39) are missing from "travel time to work". The variable codes increment from P0500001 (TRAVEL TIME[13] Less than 5 minutes) to P0500013 (TRAVEL TIME[13] Worked at home), with P0500005 and P0500008 missing - presumably the missing time frame variables. Using these in the data call results in an 'unknown variable' error. Is this a bug and the data ...more »

General design and specific API questions

Hello everyone, This is a question requiring some general direction and also some technical help: I would like to automatically (daily, weekly?) upload ACS reports by county (all 3200+) into a database hosted locally. My boss wants it in MS Access (this is not up for debate, I have tried). From MS Access, we'd like to be able to extract the fields we need to populate a .xls file or any other format. Eventually, even ...more »

Future plans/Roadmap

Is there somewhere that documents the Bureau's future plans/roadmaps for its APIs? We're getting ready to build a major project using the ACS and Population Estimate APIs, and it would be helpful to know if the bureau is committed to updating the API as new data are released. For example, last Sept. it was great to see the 2012 ACS data added to the API as the numbers were released on FactFinder. Can we expect that ...more »

I started by using sample queries such as: http://api.census.gov/data/2012/popproj/pop?get=TOTAL_POP,RACE&SEX=1&YEAR=2012&key= It worked fine earlier today, but now I keep getting the "resource not available" error. I am looking for a solid WebService API method that will allow me to submit an http request with a pre-validated US Street/City/State/Zip address and return COUNTY in xml or json about 200 times per work day.It looks like the US Census API may do it? Commercial/External APIs already interfacing with this data?

Hi, Are there any commercial/free APIs that are available for developers to use that are ALREADY sourcing from the Census.gov datasets?
