Is there any data available for political party affiliation within census data? I know it was not part of the 2010 Census Form or the American Community Survey, but I am definitely interested in mining that information if it is available somewhere else in the census database.
Hi, I'm trying to run the following query: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/acs5?key=[key]&get=B00001_001E&for=block:2001&in=state:04+county:015+tract:954900 I get the error message, "There was an error while running your query. We've logged the error and we'll correct it ASAP. Sorry for the inconvenience." If I run the same query but just use the census tract, it works, but if possible I would like to be able to... more »
I have a problem accessing the registration form : http://www.census.gov/developers/tos/key_request.html
It says that "The server at api.census.gov is taking too long to respond."
what is this due to ?
are there some geographical restrictions ? (since i am not in the US).
this applies to block groups, but others as well ... '+county:*+tract:*' with acs5 is not set to operate with the * wildcarding (using the above selects the first BG in each county only) but would be immensely valuable if county and tract can accept wildcarding rather than specific values. For most users, looking up a tract code is infeasible and generally not desireable (multi tracts being the norm). Thank you and... more »
The acs5 at state level uses a gnis coding in query. maybe others do also. It is suggested that only FIPS codes, census codes (places, tracts etc), and OMB codes (cbsa etc) be used. folks are far more familiar with FIPS codes and it willl reduce a) confusion and b) Census resources to maintain a additional layer of geocodes. it might be that gnis is going to be a national standard, maybe, but we are not there now.
I am looking for a way to get the ACS data for a radius around a given point. Using the FCC's API I can get the Census Tract and Block number to use. Does anyone know of a way to get the Census tract numbers say within a 5 mile radius?
This is intended to be positive & helpful ... to Census: the scope of tables/items is insufficient to build "real" generalized applications. Too many key tables are missing (for typical users) and many of those included are relatively infrequently used. To make this "catch" with the broad developer community, the subject matter data needs expansion. For ACS 5 year data, consider first all of those tables that are... more »
Any chance of getting this through the API? I'm mashing up Census data with FEC campaign contribution data, and it would be really interesting to have access to attributes on education, income, etc. at the ZIP level.
Earlier today (08/06) the performance was ok, requests took less than .5 seconds to return. Later in the day, around 5 PM the requests started taking over 60 seconds, and some times they were taking over 10 minutes to return. Examples on how to reproduce the problem: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/acs5?key=your_key_here&get=B17020A_003E&for=county:165&in=state:31 Another example of the performance problem can be... more »
This is just something I wanted to be able to visualize for my own entertainment/enlightenment... but I think it turned out pretty well. Still working on showing the time series of contributions in a given ZIP.
I have used an XML reader to put the ACS variables into a tree structure. However, because the variables in the XML file are not in order (after the first level), it is not particularly easy to find the variable you want--particularly when there are over 60,000. Am I missing something?
It would be nice to be able to pass in an optional parameter like &coordinates=1 and have the latitude and longitude points of each result returned in a new variable. For example, a state (or block group, tract, etc) would have a coordinate field with the array of lat/lon points of the state outline. Yes it would be a larger amount of data being returned, but it's optional. To save size, the coordinates could be... more »
A fun app that imports a users foursquare / facebook places, mashes them up with ACS data to give the user a demographic profile of the places they frequent. Maybe add some social factors to show wherein the socio-economic spectrum they seem to identify. Maybe turn it into a geocaching app that helps users identify other places that they might 'like'. Like a pandora of locations. The location genome project XD... more »
While there are thousands of individual ACS variables in the ACS data variable list (XML file), I could not find the basic Educational Attainment variables (I did find earnings by educational attainment)...Are they there and I am just not finding them?
