Using Data

Voter registration / political party data?

Is there any data available for political party affiliation within census data? I know it was not part of the 2010 Census Form or the American Community Survey, but I am definitely interested in mining that information if it is available somewhere else in the census database.

Census tracts within a radius

I am looking for a way to get the ACS data for a radius around a given point. Using the FCC's API I can get the Census Tract and Block number to use. Does anyone know of a way to get the Census tract numbers say within a 5 mile radius?

Trying to understand the Zip Code issue

Please bear with me, I'm new to this. I have been looking for a way to get Zip+4 demographics. The Census position is that they don't provide that but they point to the shapefiles. I have 2 questions: 1. Can someone simplify whether or not these shapefiles are useful or if the data I want is simply not available here? Example: what is the Male-Female ratio in 68198-9550? 2. What are other companies offering when ...more »

Comparing ACS data from year to year

Now that 2007-2011 ACS 5 year data is available in the API, please see this guidance on comparing ACS data. http://www.census.gov/acs/www/guidance_for_data_users/comparing_data/ From the page: The Census Bureau recommends that you: DO compare estimates from non-overlapping periods, for example, compare a 2005-2007 ACS 3-year estimate to a 2008-2010 ACS 3-year estimate. DON'T compare overlapping periods, for example, ...more »

Zip/County/City Radius Tool

We are trying to create a tool where a user would:

1) Enter in their "home" zip code

2) Enter in a radius in miles

3) Hit an "Update" button.

Once the user hit the Update button, the screen would show all zip codes, all cities and all counties within the specified number of miles from the home zip code. Can these Census tools be used to create such a system?

Problem with List of State Codes and Zip Code Search

I'm trying to retrieve the population for a certain zip code. What I found in your online documentation is that I should use the following URL string: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key=(key)&get=P0010001&for=zip+code+tabulation+area:(zip)&in=state:(state) ...where (key) is my API key, (zip) is the zip code, and (state) is a two digit code that you use to identify states. The problem that I run into is that I ...more »

2000 SF Census data

Hi,

Great job on the API!! It is very fast, and very easy to use. I am a developer, and know how hard it is to write programs that scale.. and you seem to have done a great job..

Just a quick question, I'm curious. I was wondering if you planned on releasing the 2000 SF Census data as well through the API? if so, do you have a target date for this?

Thanks

Problem in Virginia Data

Using the SF1 api, when I loop through the counties in Virginia, it finishes the county loop and then begins a loop through cities. I noticed it while running a nested loop for the entire US. Virginia was the only state that I noticed doing this, though there could be others. Here's the URL I'm using that generates this list of counties + cities. http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key={ikey}&get=NAME&for=county:*&in=state:51 ...more »

Additonal Data Sets Added

The statistics from the 1990 and 2000 censuses join the previously available data sets from the 2010 Census and the American Community Survey. In addition, 2011 American Community Survey estimates for the new districts formed for the 113th Congress are also now available.

Best practice for census tract level GeoID

I am trying to make tract-level thematic maps for several indicators (e.g. unemployment, median family income etc.). In the KML and SVG files I am using (including that obtained from TIGER) the 11 digit GeoID10 seems to be the best column through which I can merge data pertaining to the census tracts either by using the "GEO.id2" field from ACS data downloaded as CSV from FactFinder or through a concatenation of ...more »

Census Data Acquisition from Boundary Files

On this site: https://sites.google.com/site/stephaniesmullen/google-map-examples/census-data-acquisition the author uses census boundary files to get coordinates of points that make up the boundary of a polygon. When I tried to do the same thing with boundary files of block groups from the 2010 census for California. One of the files contents was in hex format and the block groups arrangement of polygon data ...more »

API Query Dissection

A dissection of the API query string for the Census API I have posted this in another topic, however it is hard to find. Host name, API sub-folder (this triggers our api to parse the following data). http://api.census.gov/data/ This portion refers to the DataSet/Instance pair (without both, it's difficult to determine what number you want back) 2010/sf1? This determines what variables to retrieve (required, ...more »

Census Data for Federal Grants

Many federal grants require applicants to supply Census data when responding to RFPs. Allow agencies to create a report template in AFF for applicants. This would allow for applicants to enter an address and get centroid data that was predefined by the agency. Applicants could downloaded the table in PDF form efficiently with all the available data the federal agency requires.

Using Data

Combining ACS Data with Crime Data

In order to understand how crime or criminal elements are embedded within different communities, it may be useful to combine neighborhood crime data with ACS demographic and housing data. There are hotspots in most cities that could be objectively analyzed to reveal patterns which may be disrupted by governmental policy. That is, if the data clearly points to consistent reliable trends.
