Difference between Data Profile and Summary File API?

What is the difference between the Data Profile data and the Summary file data. It seems very similar, with some overlap, but also slightly different, and I don't understand the relationship between the two. Is the Summary File information used to create the Data Profiles? Are these two totally different surveys with different metrics? It's not clear to me when I should use the Summary File vs Data Profile. I've leaned... more »

ACS 2011 1 Year

Is there a specific reason that 2011 1 year data is only available by Congressional District? I've been asked by one of our business analysts, and wanted to provide an accurate answer.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Trouble getting daytime population

Hi everyone, I'm trying to calculate the daytime population at the block level and/or the block group level. It's noted here (https://www.census.gov/hhes/commuting/data/calculations.html) that we can query the API and get the code "B08604 Total Workers for Workplace Geography." However, this code returns the "null" value in various data sets (including ACS 5-year) at the block-group and block level. It seems like... more »

Merging Table Lookup and Shell Files

In order to get the proper titles for variables/cells in the data I needed to write a program to merge two Excel files. The two files are Sequence_Number_and_Table_Number_Lookup.xls and ACS2012_5-Year_TableShells.xls. The first one contains the sequence and line numbers so that I can get the values from the data-tables. The second one has indents in the cell titles so I know how to combine them to create a proper cell... more »

List of all Legislature District "names"

I need a list of all the states' legislature's district names. I will use this list as the definitive list of district names that data is mapped to. I tried to use the " Census Name Lookup Tables" found here: https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/nlt.html but there are many district names that don't map properly to the district names returned by the 2012-5yr-ACS API. So, for example, if I submit the query: http://api.census.gov/data/2012/acs5?get=B19301_001E&for=state+legislative+district+(lower+chamber):*&in=state:50... more »

Age and Income Data by Household

Hi, I am attempting to examine households within a given geography, and would like to count the number of households which fill certain income and age constraints. For example: Household contains person age 12 Household income between $50k and $60k Is this possible using the ACS 3-year tables? When I load a generic tabulation, I know the fields exist (age, income, location) but I cannot get the conditional results (%... more »

subject matter search

Census has added the very helpful restructured subject matter item lists (eg, http://api.census.gov/data/2000/sf3/variables.html). Thank you. I am seeking an easy way to search for two or more keywords (eg, Age, Hispanic) in a nonphrase structure that will highlight rows/items that meet that condition. ... by searching on the unmodified html. Any thoughts on this? Thank you.

DATE variable in Population Estimates API

Is there any documentation for interpreting the values returned in the DATE variable in the population estimates API?

For example, http://api.census.gov/data/2013/pep/natstprc?get=POP,DATE&for=state:25&key=xxxxx returns numerically coded data values (e.g., "1", "6"). I can see by the data that 6 = 2013 but would love to see official documentation somewhere.

Thanks!

Getting null from ACS block-group query

For ACS data - is there a way to tell which codes are valid for tracts vs block group? Some codes work for both, some return "null" when the block-group level is queried. For example, the following url works for the tract level: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/acs5?key=4be82289939444f20513cd7c3c3eafb42e0d9ccf&get=B06007_003E,NAME&for=tract:*&in=state:08+county:059 But using the same code, it returns null for the... more »

Commercial/External APIs already interfacing with this data?

Hi, Are there any commercial/free APIs that are available for developers to use that are ALREADY sourcing from the Census.gov datasets? Factual's Geopulse Context was doing so as recently as 2013 but they've deprecated their API. It generated easy to access and useful demographic data from a lat/long and made importing into chart libraries super easy. Anyone know of anything similar? Happy to pay $ for a service that's... more »
