What is the difference between the Data Profile data and the Summary file data. It seems very similar, with some overlap, but also slightly different, and I don't understand the relationship between the two. Is the Summary File information used to create the Data Profiles? Are these two totally different surveys with different metrics? It's not clear to me when I should use the Summary File vs Data Profile. I've leaned ...more »
The ACS 5 Year API is returning incorrect data for the DP02_0024PE variable. It should be returning a percent value but it is returning a sum.
Should be %:
It is returning same as this:
I found a couple of errors in the variable list for SF 1 census 2010. For example P0050010 should be "Hispanic or Latino:" but is listed as something else on the variables page here
and the json here: http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1/variables/P0050010.json
are there any plans to add support for the 1980 Census and the ACS 2005-2009 5-year estimates? Any timeline on these data sources? They would be a great addition to the API.

What really makes the US economy tick? Explore the economy by NAICS code, find US states with highest salaries, search local economies, analyze historical trends.
Is there a specific reason that 2011 1 year data is only available by Congressional District? I've been asked by one of our business analysts, and wanted to provide an accurate answer.
Thanks in advance for any insight!
Hi everyone, I'm trying to calculate the daytime population at the block level and/or the block group level. It's noted here (https://www.census.gov/hhes/commuting/data/calculations.html) that we can query the API and get the code "B08604 Total Workers for Workplace Geography." However, this code returns the "null" value in various data sets (including ACS 5-year) at the block-group and block level. It seems like ...more »
In order to get the proper titles for variables/cells in the data I needed to write a program to merge two Excel files. The two files are Sequence_Number_and_Table_Number_Lookup.xls and ACS2012_5-Year_TableShells.xls. The first one contains the sequence and line numbers so that I can get the values from the data-tables. The second one has indents in the cell titles so I know how to combine them to create a proper cell ...more »
There is a limit of 50 variables in a GET. So, I can understand, sort of, the need to limit, but many of your tables have more than 50 cells. For example: [ACSSF, B04001, 0006, , 7, 109 CELLS, , FIRST ANCESTRY REPORTED, Ancestry], has 109 cells, and if I want to get Estimates plus Margin of Errors I need to get 218 variables. So, why not accept a table number parameter instead? It would make the calls much easier and ...more »
I've tried for several days to request an API key from the census developers site with no success. I have filled out the form trying a couple different email addresses and have not received any additional information. I've checked my spam folder in each of the email accounts and no results there either. What is my next step to get an api key?
I need a list of all the states' legislature's district names. I will use this list as the definitive list of district names that data is mapped to. I tried to use the " Census Name Lookup Tables" found here: https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/nlt.html but there are many district names that don't map properly to the district names returned by the 2012-5yr-ACS API. So, for example, if I submit the query: http://api.census.gov/data/2012/acs5?get=B19301_001E&for=state+legislative+district+(lower+chamber):*&in=state:50 ...more »
Hi, I am attempting to examine households within a given geography, and would like to count the number of households which fill certain income and age constraints. For example: Household contains person age 12 Household income between $50k and $60k Is this possible using the ACS 3-year tables? When I load a generic tabulation, I know the fields exist (age, income, location) but I cannot get the conditional results (% ...more »
Hello All, Is there a way to return the label and or concept instead of just the call variable code e.g. Return both DP02_0001E and "HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE!!Total households" so that the data is easily presented without further manipulation in the application. For example this would be useful in presenting the data in a table, where the table heading would be "HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE!!Total households" instead of the more ...more »
This call works:
But not this:
I get this:
error: error: unknown variable 'DP02_0067PE'
B* variables work with the same call specification.
I'm still a newbie and am trying to find a way to pull geographies via the API.
For example, is there a way for our application to only store state names or FIPS codes, then pull all other possible geographies via the API? Or, do we need to store all the needed geographies on our end?
Complete Newbie here. Trying to systematically get started. Have looked through the documentation but not exactly sure where to start when it comes to ACS data. Is there a place with all the possible URI's , URL parameters and explanations , so that if I was making a call I could look through a list and easily select the parameters and corresponding values .
While using the link above, I get the data for approx 800 counties, but there are more than 3000 counties in the country. Is the data available for all counties? If yes, how do I get the data?
I'm having trouble getting the geo-boundaries of a specific block.
For example, let's say I have the following info:
How can I know where this specific block is? In other words, how do I get the geo-boundaries of this specific block so that I can map this block with latitude, longitude coordinates?
... seems very slow. Can we expect this speed or is it just today ... or maybe something else?
I think there may be small glitch in the API for table B05006 for the 5-year ACS for 2012 -- something about the terminal, 161th variable: The following call works fine for 2011: http://api.census.gov/data/2011/acs5?get=B05006_161E,NAME&for=county:*&in=state:22 but when I try the same for 2012, there's trouble: http://api.census.gov/data/2012/acs5?get=B05006_161E,NAME&for=county:*&in=state:22 The other variables ...more »
Hi All, I believe that the Census 2010 API documentation (http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1/variables.html) has an error for the table: P12A. Sex By Age (White Alone). It appears that both P012A026 and P012A049 are attributed as Female: !! 85 years and over. I believe that P012A026 should be 'Female' (as in the total of all females. BTW - I have *not* checked the data as of yet. The data could be correct with ...more »
Following up on my request of 10 months ago ... it does not appear that any urban population or housing unit items are populated at the block level.
This is a request for Census to populate those few 2010 SF1 urban/rural update fields for all summary levels.
The link at http://api.census.gov/data/eits/eits_program_code_RESCONST.xml provides us with most of the information we need to use the API to access data for Residential Construction in the "Economic Indicators Time Series" data. What appears to be missing are variables for the "get" parameter. Manually downloaded data sets (non-api) do not reveal or hint at any variables that could be used either. So maybe there is ...more »
An ACS 2013 CBSA "name" in the API call is "for=metropolitan+statistical+area/micropolitan+statistical+area"
That does not work for summary level 314.
What is the spelling of the "name" for a metropolitan division? Guessing,
"for=metropolitan+division" does not work.
Can you please provide a full sample? complete with a MD code.
I'm new to using the API and was wondering if you have seen examples of using the API to retrieve data needed to build a population pyramid for population of a zip code.
If there are no examples, I would like to build it with a team and add it to the forum for public use. Let me know if you want to collaborate.
