Tell Me About this Area

This app uses the American Community Survey data to provide users with a quick overview of the demographics, social, economic, and housing statistics of the geographic area that a user is passing through. The application uses a mobile phone’s GPS to determine the user’s geographic location and displays data based on the location. The application would display facts about the community from the Community Facts pages ...more »

American Community Finder / Builder

Filter local meetups by various variables within the ACS 5-year data down to the block-group (enabled by zooming into the geographic area). By mashing these two APIs (http://www.meetup.com/meetup_api/, http://www.census.gov/developers/data/) together, community builders can identify groups and leadership/influencers that exist within areas of interest. Hopefully enabling a sort of distributed knowledge management system. ...more »

Poverty map by age and sex

http://pad.human.cornell.edu/Unlisted/uncertaintymap_fullinfo_api_B17001.cfm

I had already created a thematic map application that gave information about the uncertainty surrounding ACS estimates (move your mouse over the counties). This website generates the map using API data requests. A future expansion will include parsing the variables XML file.

Fact Finder Widget

The Census Fact Finder Widget would be a code copy and paste sortable HTML table / choropleth map that would pull data from the Census via a query similar to that found inside the AFF web application. This application would allow sites like the SBA.gov add map / table projections to their pages based on various industries and help local entrepreneurs find out about the existing industry landscape and demographics in very ...more »

Visualizing CFPB and Census Data

I am working on analyzing CFPB Consumer Complaint database with help from census data to better understand what type of financial products consumers are having trouble with. Census data helps break down what type of consumers are having what type of issues.

JQuery/Ajax library

Earlier I mentioned the idea for a library that would take care of filling DOM elements with data. Yesterday I created a github repository for this and committed the beginnings of such a library. To see this library in action I created a couple of examples: http://pad.human.cornell.edu/Unlisted/ACS5API/Example.html This is a table with on the left an explanation of how the right cell is defined. http://pad.human.cornell.edu/Unlisted/ACS5API/Example1.html ...more »

Campaign: API Technical Discussions

Response format is unusual and hard to use

First, let me applaud the Census Bureau for doing this, it's an awesome project. I'm glad to see JSON as the response format for the API, but structure makes it really hard to use. I also haven't seen this list-of-lists format for individual records before. What would work much better would be one of the following: a) an array of objects. Within each object, each field name is a key, each value is the value associated ...more »
