High Risk/Vulnerable Individuals

To help local governments better plan for disaster recovery for their residents, it would helpful to know which areas contained high risk/vulnerable individuals. These individuals might include the elderly, small children, disabled individuals, those who are language isolated, and those who do not have access to a vehicle. Creation of heat maps, or other visualizations of these populations can help emergency management... more »

General Feedback

ACS 5yr 2011

If I get all of my queries for my database that I need working on the ACS 5yr 2010 API, will I be able to run the same query on Dec 6th by simply changing the 2010 in the URL to 2011?

For example, this query works now:
http://api.census.gov/data/2010/acs5?key={key}&get=B00001_001E&for=tract:*&in=state:41+county:005

On Dec 6th will it work if I submit this?:
http://api.census.gov/data/2011/acs5?key={key}&get=B00001_001E&for=tract:*&in=state:41+county:005... more »

Bugs / Problems

more than four variables?

I can't seem to get more than four variables to return.

When I run this query:
http://api.census.gov/data/2010/acs5?key={key}&get=B08101_017E,B08101_017M,B08101_025E,B08101_025M,B08101_033E,B08101_033M,B08101_041E,B08101_041M&for=tract:*&in=state:41+county:005

I get an error like this:
error: error: unknown variable 'B08101_033E,B08101_033M,B08101_041E,B08101_041M'

When I run the query with only the first four variables... more »

Facebook Places / Foursquare + ACS 5-yr Mashup

A fun app that imports a users foursquare / facebook places, mashes them up with ACS data to give the user a demographic profile of the places they frequent.

Maybe add some social factors to show wherein the socio-economic spectrum they seem to identify.

Maybe turn it into a geocaching app that helps users identify other places that they might 'like'. Like a pandora of locations. The location genome project XD... more »

ACS Choropleth Maps

http://acsmapper.appspot.com/D3

Given the dearth of other live examples, I felt like I should post something, though I haven't been able to do a lot of necessary cleanup and polish. It was nice to be able to pull something like this together with just a few hours of work via the Census API, though.

For a given ACS sub-table (anything with an _002E or higher suffix), I'm calling the data for all US counties and dividing... more »

Poverty map by age and sex

http://pad.human.cornell.edu/Unlisted/uncertaintymap_fullinfo_api_B17001.cfm

I had already created a thematic map application that gave information about the uncertainty surrounding ACS estimates (move your mouse over the counties). This website generates the map using API data requests. A future expansion will include parsing the variables XML file.

Using Data

List of all Legislature District "names"

I need a list of all the states' legislature's district names. I will use this list as the definitive list of district names that data is mapped to. I tried to use the " Census Name Lookup Tables" found here:
https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/nlt.html
but there are many district names that don't map properly to the district names returned by the 2012-5yr-ACS API. So, for example, if I submit the query:
http://api.census.gov/data/2012/acs5?get=B19301_001E&for=state+legislative+district+(lower+chamber):*&in=state:50... more »

Using Data

Getting null from ACS block-group query

For ACS data - is there a way to tell which codes are valid for tracts vs block group?

Some codes work for both, some return "null" when the block-group level is queried.

For example, the following url works for the tract level:
http://api.census.gov/data/2010/acs5?key=4be82289939444f20513cd7c3c3eafb42e0d9ccf&get=B06007_003E,NAME&for=tract:*&in=state:08+county:059

But using the same code, it returns null for the... more »

Using Data

Combining ACS Data with Crime Data

In order to understand how crime or criminal elements are embedded within different communities, it may be useful to combine neighborhood crime data with ACS demographic and housing data. There are hotspots in most cities that could be objectively analyzed to reveal patterns which may be disrupted by governmental policy. That is, if the data clearly points to consistent reliable trends.

American Community Finder / Builder

Filter local meetups by various variables within the ACS 5-year data down to the block-group (enabled by zooming into the geographic area).

By mashing these two APIs (http://www.meetup.com/meetup_api/, http://www.census.gov/developers/data/) together, community builders can identify groups and leadership/influencers that exist within areas of interest. Hopefully enabling a sort of distributed knowledge management system.... more »

Using Data

Block Data from ACS

In looking at the geography levels supported by 2012 ACS, I don't see block-level data.

See:
http://api.census.gov/data/2012/acs5/profile/geography.json

I am looking for block data support like this (that I'm using from 2010 decennial survey):
{
"name": "block",
"requires": [
"state",
"county",
"tract"
]
}

API Variable Question for ACS2011 5 Year

Preface: New to API Calls & Census Data (not sure the proper Campaign to post on)

Curious, how can I more efficiently pull data through the API without having to specify each individual Unique ID (found in the ACS2011_5-Year_TableShells.xls file)?

If I wanted to pull all data for Table ID: B01001 what would my {&get=} be?

Currently, I am using each individual Unique ID as so:
http://api.census.gov/data/2011/acs5?{key}&get=B01001_001E,B01001_002E,B01001_003E,B01001_004E,B01001_005E,B01001_006E,B01001_007E,B01001_008E,B01001_009E,B01001_010E,NAME&for=state:06... more »

ACS data for zip code tabulation area

Hi all,

I am trying to use the api to collect information for zip code tabulation areas from the ACS 2011 survey.

I have tried several variations of the following url, but get an unsupported/unknown geography error:

http://api.census.gov/data/2011/acs5?key={key}&get=B25070_003E&for=zip+code+tabulation+area:*&in=state:06

I have read elsewhere on this form that the 2011 ACS is now available via the API by zip... more »

Using Data

Improving API documentation

Example of easier to follow API documentation:
http://developer.usatoday.com/docs/read/Census

Versus no coded variable definitions on the page:
https://www.census.gov/developers/data/

All the needed content is in this presentation, but it was not intuitive to click on it since it refers to a specific event: https://www.census.gov/developers/NDoCH_Support_Slides.pdf Maybe rename it "ACS API Handbook"? Great great... more »
