Feature Requests

2000 County Subdivision SF1 and SF3

We are looking to pull county subdivision data for 2008-12, 2010 and 2000. Unfortunately, unlike the other two, 2000 county subdivision geography is not available for SF1 or SF3. We would love to have this data be made available through the API.

http://api.census.gov/data/2000/sf3/geo.html

Looking to have added:
Summary Level:060 state-county-county subdivision

Latitude/Longitude in PDI

Hi All,

I am trying to call the API for the the geocoder census geographical locations for few addresses I have in my database. I want the longitude/latitude values for each address.I want to call the API through a javascript in an ETL tool. Can anyone suggest method or any useful link for that? It would be a great help.

Thanks!!

API supporting multiple geography query

Hi All,

I have been working on my application and one of the things I would like to do is query the same variable on multiple geographies. For instance, get the total population at the Block Group, Tract, County, State, and Nation.

Right now, it is my understanding that this would represent five different calls to the API.

Can this be done in one call to the API ?

Query help

Hi,

I've been working with the following query:

http://api.census.gov/data/2012/popproj/pop?get=TOTAL_POP,POP_4,POP_3,POP_2,POP_1,POP_0&ORIGIN=0&RACE=0&SEX=0&YEAR=2012&key=

I think it is returning total usa population of age 5 and under for the year 2012. Is there a way to get the same information for each state?

In other words is per state information available from popproj/pop? Or do I need to query another data... more »

Using Data

Improving API documentation

Example of easier to follow API documentation:
http://developer.usatoday.com/docs/read/Census

Versus no coded variable definitions on the page:
https://www.census.gov/developers/data/

All the needed content is in this presentation, but it was not intuitive to click on it since it refers to a specific event: https://www.census.gov/developers/NDoCH_Support_Slides.pdf Maybe rename it "ACS API Handbook"? Great great... more »

Bugs / Problems

Invalid API Key

I just signed up and received a key from the Census API. I created a query, copied the key into the query and submitted it.

The response said:

A valid key must be included with each data API request. You included a key with this request, however, it is not valid. Please check your key and try again.

If you do not have a key you my sign up for one here.

I am not sure how I could have screwed this up here... Any... more »

geographic boundaries

First of all I want to thank you all at the Census for your brilliant effort in providing a usable API. I think the documentation needs to be improved, though, with more examples of string requests and possible use of wild cards, if any.

I am currently working on a web application where I want the user to visualize demographic indicators within a certain distance from a specific/user-picked LatLong (for instance total... more »

Bugs / Problems

Error in Census 2010 API document ?

Hi All,

I believe that the Census 2010 API documentation (http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1/variables.html) has an error for the table: P12A. Sex By Age (White Alone).

It appears that both P012A026 and P012A049 are attributed as Female: !! 85 years and over.

I believe that P012A026 should be 'Female' (as in the total of all females.

BTW - I have *not* checked the data as of yet. The data could be correct with... more »

Invalid API Key Message

Hello, I recently obtained and validated my API key. However, when I attempt to enter a test URL in my browser window with my api key I receive a message stating "A valid key must be included with each data API request. You included a key with this request, however, it is not valid. Please check your key and try again."

Demographics by zip code

Newbie here. I searched the api documentation and still do not fully understand how to use it.

I would like to find the average house value for a given zip code from the 2010 census data. Possible?

If so, please provide an example URL for 09210.

Can the same call be made for multiple zip codes that make up an area?

Thanks!

Bugs / Problems

Duplicate (and incorrect) "Female 85 years and older" variable

I'm examining a tract in NYC. I found two different codes (P0120026 and P0120049) whose label and concept match exactly:

"label": "Female: !! 85 years and over",
"concept": "P12. Sex By Age [49]"

Furthermore, they return VASTLY different values. See queries below:

http://api.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key=[key]&get=P0120049,NAME&for=block:*&in=state:36+county:061+tract:004200
